Brief History of Chumphon Provincial Treasury Office

According to the available documents, it is not clear when exactly Chumphon Provincial
Treasury Office was founded. However, based on the legend of Nakorn Srithammarat Province, Chumphon was a small old town. Around year 555 Prince Srithamma Sogaraj promoted Chumphon to become one of Nakorn Srithammarat’s 12-year cycle towns, having a goat symbol and functioning as a northern buffer town because Chumphon was in the upper south of Siam Kingdom.
It is believed from the historical evidence that Chumphon officially became a town in 1454 in the reign of King Boromtrailognat of the Ayuthya Period, when the Three-cycle Law was issued. The law was enforced until the Rattakosin Period. King Rama I had it amended and he ordered the senior government officials in the south to comply with the feudalism. As Chumphon was a small town, its governor, Ogya Kao-nga Trathibbodi Srisurat Walaumnak, could possess the land of 5,000 rai, according to the law. It is apparent that Chumphon has been a province in the south of Siam Kingdom since 1916.
It is assumed that Chumphon Town Treasury Office was established when Chumphon officially became the province. The office was set up in the City Hall located at No. 1 Poraminmunka Road, Muang District, Chumphon Province. Unfortunately, Chumphon Town was seriously attacked by Typhoon Gay in 1989 and again by Typhoon Cetar in 1997; the City Hall was flooded and lots of official documents were damaged and lost. The area of the old city hall was too small to accommodate additional offices. Therefore, in March 2000 the Chumphon Provincial Government Center was newly set up at No. 333, Trairat Road, Nachaung Village, Muang District, Chumphon Province. Chumphon Provincial Treasury Office has been moved there since then. The provincial treasurer at that time was Mr. Preecha Pochai.
Based on the evidence, it can be summarized that Chumphon Town Treasury Office was initially run from 1907 to 1913 having Mr. Choy as the treasury officer. Later from 1913 to 1913 Mr. Thong was the next treasury officer. The last town treasurer was Khun Sathornsuttharat, posted in 1914-1915. Chumphon Town Treasury Office has become Chumphon Provincial Treasury Office since 1926. The first provincial treasurer was Luang Anek Pitsathorn, posted in 1926-1939. And the present provincial treasurer is Ms. Suwanee Sukprawit, who has been on duty since December 2012 until now.
